Course Summary

This course will introduce care workers to the principles of caring for people with palliative conditions.

The content of the course will enhance learners palliative care knowledge concerning symptoms and symptom relief for the non-clinician.

What will I learn?

Course content:

  • What is a palliative condition?
  • Distinguishing the difference between palliative conditions and terminal conditions.
  • Being familiar with the needs of service users.
  • Understanding the individual service user’s place and responsibilities within the family network.
  • Explaining the complex issues around communication and those suffering a palliative condition.
  • Understanding and verbalising some of the main symptoms associated with palliative service users.
  • Enhancing the carer’s awareness of the main types of treatments associated with palliative service users.
  • Recognition of emergencies in cancer palliative care.
  • Awareness of the cultural and religious issues surrounding death
  • Self awareness of the emotional issues surrounding death

What are the entry requirements?

This course is for health care professionals working with people who are dying or suffering with palliative conditions and/or diseases, or anyone who wants to raise their awareness on how to care for the dying as well as raising their awareness on palliative conditions/diseases
