Essential Skills for Work
A company is only as good as its workforce.
Paying attention to the essential skills of employees can lead to greater efficiency, lower wastage, a boost in productivity and profitability, as well as improved customer relations and reduced staff absenteeism.
Improved literacy, language and numerical skills can help employees achieve greater job satisfaction by enabling them to carry out their job to a higher standard.
Training and support can be tailored to meet the needs and requirements of businesses. Learning arrangements are flexible and include:
- Reading, writing, language and numeracy skills
- Intensive courses
- Courses before and after work
- Flexibility around shift patterns
- Essential skills integrated into current or future training programmes
- A mixture of the above.
Training will be in small groups and we can deliver the course either at your company premises or here at the College.
Government funding is available to support Skills for Life so training will be free at point of delivery for literacy and numeracy.
For organizations not eligible for the Train to Gain funding, associated costs may be minimised by use of a ‘one for one’ approach

"Oldham Athletic Football Club prides itself on having excellent links with the local community. The club were looking at more ways to interact with those in need. The "Heading for Success" scheme set up with the Oldham College encouraged adult supporters to tackle their skills for life needs by improving levels of numeracy and literacy.
"“We are pleased to be working with the Oldham College and we look forward to a constructive partnership in order to take forward the Heading for Success initiative” Alan Hardy, Chief Executive, Oldham Athletic "
