Oldham Athletic's latest signing is a star free transfer

16th April 2007

Oldham Athletic has signed a new player to strengthen its squad and is confident the new recruit will help the town's performances on and off the pitch.

The Oldham College has recently signed a partnership agreement with the club to take forward the Heading for Success initiative and improve the  levels of  numeracy and literacy across the town. The idea behind the scheme is to provide free education for those in need using football imagery to provide a practical application of these key skills.

Chief Executive of Oldham Athletic football club, Alan Hardy, says he's delighted with the deal:

"We are pleased to be working with Oldham College and we  look forward to a constructive partnership in order to take forward the Heading for Success initiative"

Oldham Athletic are happy to be working alongside The Oldham College because of the amount of experience the college has in working with unemployed learners. Heading for Success provides people living in the area with the basic skills and support they need to move on to Jobcentre Plus training and to be better prepared to compete for work.

A transfer fee has been agreed and is being used to help with start up costs to attract new learners on HfS Skills for Life programmes.

Funding from the Department of Education and Skills is being used to buy computer equipment, improve facilities at the ground and pay for a development worker to generate links with the community.
